Strength is your primary stat. You should look for it in all of your upgrades. It provides you with Attack Power, which determines the damage your abilities do.
Mastery (Mastery: Frozen Heart) increases your Frost damage. Frost damage makes up a great part of your total damage.
Multistrike causes your abilities to have a chance to hit/heal a second and a third time, each time dealing 30% of the initial damage/heal.
Versatility increases all your damage and healing done, and decreases all damage taken.
Haste increases the amount of procs of Killing Machine, your attack speed, and your rune regeneration rate.
Critical Strike increases your chance to critically hit with all spells and abilities.
As Frost, you should always be in Frost Presence.
Single Target Rotation
Priority System looks something like this:
Keep your diseases (Frost Fever/Blood Plague) up at all times.
Apply Frost Fever with Howling Blast, and apply Blood Plague with Plague Strike. In the case of Plague Strike, make sure that you use an Unholy rune for it, and not a Death rune.
Cast Frost Strike if:
you are about to reach maximum runic power or
you have a Killing Machine proc.
Cast Howling Blast when you have a Rime proc.
Use your Unholy Runes on Obliterate.
Use your Death and Frost runes on Howling Blast, leaving at least one spare rune for each Unholy rune you currently have so that you can cast Obliterate.
Cast Soul Reaper
only when the target is below 35% health.
Multiple Target Rotation
Apply diseases (Frost Fever/Blood Plague) to target. And spread them to others using Blood Boil.
Use Howling Blast to do massive amounts of damage to the groups.
Rune /Runic Power Usage:
Use all your Death runes to Blood Boil spam.
Use your Unholy runes to cast Death and Decay(or Defile) on cooldown and Obliterate.
Use your runic power on Frost Strike.
When to use Cooldowns
Pillar of Frost
Cost: 1 Frost
Grants you 20% Strength for 20 seconds, with a 1-minute cooldown. You should use this ability on cooldown. Ideally, you should couple it with any on-use trinkets you may have.
Empower Rune Weapon
Refreshes all your runes and gives you 25 runic power, but has a 5 minute cooldown.
Be mindful when you use this, it can be used when you have no runes available or are runic power starved.
Army of the Dead
Cost: 1 Blood, 1 Unholy, 1 Frost
Only worth using before the pull.
Pro-Tip: Mastering the Frost Death Knight
Dual-Wielding Versus Two-Handed
Two-handed and dual-wielding playstyles are practically the same in single-target, but dual-wielding pulls ahead in AoE/cleaving situations.
Keeping Diseases Up
Frost Fever will be automatically applied each time you cast Howling Blast. If there is a long period of time will go by without a Rime proc, just use Howling Blast without a Rime proc to refresh Frost Fever.
Blood Plague will have to be kept up manually either through Outbreak or Plague Strike.
Plague Leech is a Tier 1 talent that you should take, use it to consume your diseases on the target, when Blood Plague is about to expire and Outbreak is off cooldown. Quickly re-apply the diseases using Outbreak.
You can also use it to consume diseases on the target even if Outbreak is on cooldown, provided that Blood Plague is about to expire and you have a Rime proc.
Killing Machine Procs
Auto attacks have a chance to make the next Obliterate/Frost Strike a critical strike due to Killing Machine.
When dual-wielding, use Killing Machine procs on Frost Strike, and when you are using a Two-Handed Weapon, use them on Obliterate.
Obliterate has a 45% chance to cause the next Howling Blast/Icy Touch to be free due to Rime. Only use Howling Blast on these procs.
The difficult part of the Dual-Wielding rotation is when your trying to master the proper balance of Obliterate usage. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that the way to use Obliterate differs wildly based on your tier 5 talent choice.
If you are using Runic Empowerment, keep in mind that this talent will refresh a fully-depleted rune. Since you never want Runic Empowerment to grant you Unholy runes, you must make sure to never have both Unholy runes depleted when you use Frost Strike. You should only use Obliterate when you have both Unholy runes active, since if you deplete both runes, then your next Frost Strike may give you an Unholy rune back.
If you are using Blood Tap, you do not really need to worry too much about which runes it regenerates, as long as you do not allow Blood Tap to reach maximum charges (12) and use the runes on Howling Blast.
Soul Reaper can be used at any time throughout the fight, but it will be most beneficial when the target is below 35% HP because of the proc that deals double damage on the target.
Use Soul Reaper mainly as an execute to increase your DPS.
Anti-Magic Shell absorbs 75% of all Magic damage taken for 5 seconds, and gives you runic power based on the amount of damage it absorbs.
The added Runic Power greatly increases your damage done. So time your Anti-Magic Shell when there is going to be a raid wide Magic Damage ability.
Tier 1 Talents
Plague Leech is the best choice. Which will allow you to gain a few Death runes over the course of the fight.
Tier 2 Talents
Purgatory will save your life. It’s great for progression fights, or for those times you make a mistake and don’t get out of an ability in time.
Tier 3 Talents
Death’s Advance is the best choice. 30% movement speed for 6 seconds, and 10% passive movement speed.
Other talents can be selected, but purely situational.
Tier 4 Talents
Blood Tap is currently the best choice for the dual-wielding playstyle.
Blood Tap passively causes every 15 Runic Power that you spend to generate a Blood Charge, and you can have up to a maximum of 12 charges. Using Blood Tap consumes 5 charges, activating a random fully depleted rune as a Death Rune. Blood Tap is not on the global cooldown, and it has no cooldown and no cost.
Runic Empowerment is the best choice for the two-handed playstyle.
Runic Empowerment acts passively whenever you spend Runic Power. For every point of Runic Power spent, you have a 1.50% chance to activate a random fully-depleted rune.
Tier 5 Talents
Death Pact is the best choice because it has no resource cost and supplies are large amount of healing.
Tier 6 Talents
Remorseless Winter may have some usefulness in stunning mobs so that they don’t damage you or the other raid members.
The other talents may also be selected, but its purely situational.
Tier 7 Talents
The best option in this tier is Defile. In the event that the targets will not remain in Defile’s area of effect, if not Necrotic Plague is your best choice for high movement fights.
Glyph of Blood Boil — Increases the range of Blood Boil by 5 yards.
Glyph of Raise Ally — Removes the runic power cost of Raise Ally, allowing you to use it exactly when it is needed.
Glyph of Regenerative Magic — Procs each time your Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell expires from you without having been fully consumed by damage. When this happens, the cooldown of Anti-Magic Shell is reduced by an amount based on how much damage it had absorbed (the more damage absorbed, the smaller the reduction), up to a maximum of 50%. This glyph is very beneficial in allowing you to gain more runic power over the course of the fight.
Glyph of Tranquil Grip — Causes your Death Grip to no longer taunt the target.
Glyph of Army of the Dead — Causes your ghouls to no longer taunt their target.
Glyph of Path of Frost — Causes your Path of Frost to reduce your fall damage.
