This past week at BlizzCon, the StarCraft Team announced that this years Rock the Cabinet theme will focus around Co-Op commanders and missions. Last years the Fantasy theme was a huge success, and we are looking forward to see what the community can create inside the Blizzard Arcade this year using the StarCraft API.
The StarCraft team also let us know that the last part of the Nova: Covert Ops mission pack will be coming before the end of the year. It’s official release dates appears to be November 22nd, 2016. Along with the mission, we will also be receiving a digital comic that will be available inside StarCraft itself that will give more of the story leading up to the mission pack. It’s exciting to see more Blizzard IP’s following suit of Overwatch and added additional content via comics, shorts, etc. You can find out more about Nova: Covert Ops here!
During the Open Ceremonies at BlizzCon, it was announced that StarCraft will be working together with Google Deep Mind in order to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to play against the best StarCraft players in the world. This advancement in AI could help in many different fields of medical research, procedures and more. It’s an exciting time to be a gamer! You can find out more about Deep Mind and it’s work with StarCraft here!
BlizzCon has always been a very busy place for the Heroes of the Storm team, from the original game announcement of Blizzard All-Stars, to the World Championships, and this year was no different. The Heroes team had yet another trick up their sleeves as they introduced two new heroes that will be coming to the Nexus, King Varian and Ragnaros from World of Warcraft. Varian will be the first multi-class hero that the Nexus will see, which means he is able to play both Warrior and Assassin roles during battle giving him an insane amount of choice and customization to his game-play. Ragnaros will be a hero that is able to take control over a fallen or still standing tower or fort, and use it as his temple of destruction. Both these heroes will be coming shortly to the Nexus, Varian on November 15th, and Ragnaros coming in December. If you want to check out some of the different things that the Heroes team has cooking, check out this in-developement post!
But two new heroes aren’t the only thing that the Heroes team had for us, they have also announced that they will be releasing a new Brawl called Blackheart’s Revenge where only one team has a core. That means one team will be attacking, and the other team defending. This will change up the meta a ton because teams will have to focus on both offensive and defensive hero picks going forward. This could definitely have an interesting outcome when it comes to competitive and esports play!
It wouldn’t be a BlizzCon without some type of Hearthstone announcement! This year they teased us about Gadgetzan leading up to BlizzCon, and they did not fail to deliver when they announced the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion! This expansion will bring 132 new cards to the game, but also introduces the new multi-class cards that will be able to be used in more than one class deck. For example, mages, warlocks and priests will be able to use the same card, and it will produce different results outside the normal rule set for those classes, such as mages getting healing adds, or warlocks getting mage spells, etc. This new change will definitely change up the Hearthstone meta on live, and we are both glad there is a Wild and Standard play option in place in the game now! To find out more about the Mean Streets, check out the official announcement!
The community hyped up whatever was coming for Diablo more than we could have ever imagined, we heard Diablo MMO’s, to Diablo card games and beyond. But after 20 years, the Diablo team wasn’t going to disappoint us! So they announced that coming soon, they will be retrofitting Diablo I in the Diablo III engine! This will result in a new area called The Darkening of Tristram which will show case some wonderful 8-bit graphics and sounds, as well as only 8 directions of movement. It will be a 16 level dungeon crawl that will still have the same bosses as Diablo I! This is all being done in order to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Diablo that is coming in January. This patch is currently available on the PTR for testing. So go check it out!
Also, this past week the Diablo team announced that it will have it’s first ever DLC coming to the game in the form of a new hero! We have all waited since Diablo II to play the Necromancer again, and it looks like we will get that chance to play one again sometime in 2017. This will be a purchasable character slot, so if you are interested it will cost you some money. But everything else will be completely free with that content patch. So if you have no interest in playing as a Necromancer, then there is no pressure to spend any of your hard earned cash! If you want to find out more about Necromancer, check out this article here!
We hate to say it, but we definitely called it! Sombra hacked into the BlizzCon opening ceremonies and take control of the stage! So after months of teasing, and deep diving into the ARG, we can finally see the hero we all dreamed up in our heads! She is the first hero to have a sub-machine gun (SMG) in her kit, and her ultimate shuts down most lines of defense. This new stealthy, agile hero will be giving heroes their run for their money in upcoming months on the competitive circuit. If you want to check her out, she is available on the PTR right now for testing!
But that’s not the only new thing coming to Overwatch. It was also announced that we will have two new maps coming, Eco Point Antarctica, and Oasis. Eco Point is set up as the starting point for the new game modes that are being introduced into the arcade. 1v1, 3v3 and more! The Overwatch team listened to everything the player base as been saying and they are making a major changes to the way that the Weekly Brawls are going to be handled going forward with a major focus on the reward system for completing matches. If you want to know more about it, check it all out here!
But wait, there’s more! The Overwatch team wasn’t done there. In the weeks leading up to BlizzCon, it was leaked that there would be an Overwatch League coming to an esports arena near you. But none of us could have known at the caliber that Blizzard was going for with this announcement. With mirroring many of the other professional sports leagues in America, the Overwatch League will offer players with benefits, a set salary, and will have teams set up regionally throughout the United States. This is a huge step for Overwatch and esports together. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Blizzard gamer. So stop reading this, and go start practicing your Overwatch skills because you could be the next person who’s name is getting chanted inside a major sports arena! (Don’t forget about us, we were there for you since the Beginning!). Check out more about the Overwatch League here!
